Richard Byatt's Blog

In this blog Richard took a broad view of facilities management. It covers BIFM's relationship with Government, with other professions and with international FM organisations. It also looks at the wider world beyond FM.

Six New Year's resolutions for FM

21-12-11, 02:53

Back in October I took part in a debate at TWM with the theme: "How can FM be heard within the walls of Whitehall?"

As the discussion developed it became clear that the underlying issues were ones of profile, recognition and professional confidence. I thought we should shift our focus and suggested two things we should stop doing; two things we should start doing and two things we need to be.

In the spirit of the season, I offer them again as New Year's Resolutions for the FM profession.

1 Stop arguing about definitions. A working definition for any situation is good enough.

2. Stop assuming we have a right to be heard. If we demonstrate relevance, recognition will follow.

3. Start focusing on areas where FM has a distinctive message. For example, the experience of running buildings and services affects (or should do) design, construction and even the financing of facilities.

4. Start working together. Integration will be the watchword, so FM needs to understand and work with other disciplines.

5. Be realistic - don't underplay the strengths of FM but don't exaggerate its importance either.

6. Be focused - as individuals, as organisations and as a profession.
