Entry Requirements

In order to benefit from the investment of time and energy demanded by the direct examination route, BIFM recommends that candidates should meet these minimum entry requirements.

Entry criteria – Part I

All candidates must have reached the age of 17 years by the closing date for examination bookings.

  • Additionally, candidates must hold one of the following:
  • at least 5 GCSEs or their equivalent at Grade C or above, including English Language and Mathematics
  • at least 1 GCE ‘A’ Level, 1 Higher (Scottish) or 2 GCE ‘A/S’ Levels
  • a National Certificate or Diploma, in a subject approved by the BIFM Exemptions committee, awarded by BTEC, SCOTVEC, their predecessors or equivalents
  • an NVQ or SVQ at Level 2 or above in a subject approved by the BIFM Exemptions committee
  • a GNVQ Advanced Level in a subject approved by the BIFM Exemptions committee

The following conditions offer exemption from these academic requirements:

  • a minimum of one year’s relevant facilities management experience and/or candidates aged 25 years or over by the closing date for examination bookings

Entry criteria – Part II

Candidates must have successfully completed all the modules within Part I of the BIFM examinations.  Alternatively candidates must hold either:

  • a degree, in a subject approved by the BIFM Exemptions committee
  • a Higher National Certificate or Diploma, in a subject approved by the BIFM Exemptions committee, awarded by BTEC, SCOTVEC, their predecessors or equivalents
  • an NVQ or SVQ at Level 3 or above in a subject approved by the BIFM Exemptions committee
  • a professional qualification recognised and approved by the BIFM Exemptions committee
  • Member or Fellow grade of BIFM membership, or Associate membership granted before January 1999

Non native speakers of English

All Modules in both parts of the BIFM Examinations require candidates to write in a narrative style on the subjects being examined. Due to the nature and time constraints of the examinations, it is therefore recommended that candidates have reached a minimum level of English in the IELTS (International English Language Testing Service) as follows:

  • For the BIFM Part I = Band 5
  • For the BIFM Part II = Band 6

Details of the IELTS test can be found on the IELTS website: www.ielts.org/candidates/default.aspx
