The following is a list of frequently asked questions and comments raised by candidates considering the examination route to the BIFM Qualification.
What Membership concessions am I entitled to?
If you wish to sit a BIFM examination you will need to complete an exam booking form. On receipt of this booking form, the BIFM will trigger free membership for you for one year.
If you wish to sit exams in the future but are not ready to do so yet then you will be entitled to a concessional rate of £56 for the year.
- If you are not a member of the BIFM already then your membership concession will happen with immediate effect.
- If you already hold membership with the BIFM then you will receive your membership concession retrospectively at your membership renewal date.
All candidates will be put into one of two membership categories: Associate or Member grade regardless of the concession they are entitled to. Anyone who believes they are entitled to Member grade membership will need to email exams@bifm.org.uk.
Why should I choose the Examination Route?
Passing the exams can be the first step to a new career or recognition of experience and knowledge gained.

- Candidates gain a competitive edge and enhanced employability.
Who is the Examination Route suitable for?
All who satisfy the entry requirements are eligible for this route to the Qualification. It is particularly suited to both relatively new or aspiring Facilities Managers wanting to develop their knowledge as well as more experienced Facilities Managers wanting to consolidate their knowledge.
When is the closing date for the exam entries?
The examinations take place twice a year at the start of June and December. The closing date is usually 7 weeks before the exams take place. Closing dates for booking onto the next examination series are published under

I want to cancel or defer my exams. When is the closing date?

I have other Qualifications that may be relevant. Can I be exempt from any exam modules?
All candidates who hold Member grade membership with the BIFM, therefore who have more than 5 years experience in Management, 3 in Facilities Management are entitled to automatic exemption from Part I of the exams.
Any candidate who feels that their previous qualifications may be relevant to the BIFM examination syllabus can apply for exemption from relevant modules. To find out more please click on

What will it cost?
There will be examination fees to be paid to the BIFM and tuition fees to be paid directly to the Course Provider. For more information click on the

. Is there a recommended book list?
There is a
book list available on the Knowledge page of the BIFM website. This lists standard texts used by Universities and Colleges and when combined, the content of the text covers most of the exam syllabus.
What level are the exams?
The examinations are not currently in the QCA framework of national qualifications. However, as a general guideline, Part I is set at approximately HND standard and Part II at first degree standard.
The Open University has accredited the BIFM Examinations. They have awarded Part I with 40 points and Part II with 60 points towards an Open University degree.
I have a disability. Can you make special arrangements for me?
The BIFM is happy to make reasonable adjustments for candidates with disabilities. When you complete your exam booking form, please fill in the reasonable adjustments section so that we are made aware of your requirements at the point of booking onto the exam.

How long do we have to wait before we get our results?
The BIFM examination scripts undergo a rigorous process of marking, double-marking and moderation. Results are available 12 weeks after the exam dates. For further details, please click on

How are results sent out?
Results are sent by first class post to the candidates’ home addresses.
Where can I find results statistics for the BIFM exams results?

Where can I find the Exam booking form?
You can download the exam booking form by clicking on the
Booking page. Alternatively the booking form can be downloaded from the Homepage of our website as soon as we begin to accept bookings for the forth coming examination series.
