Exemptions
Exemptions policy and procedure for BIFM Direct Examination Routes Part I and Part II
- As a Member grade member of the BIFM (MBIFM), you are granted automatic exemption from Part I of the BIFM examinations. A Member grade member will have at least 5 years’ management experience, 3 of which will have been in Facilities Management.
If you feel you may be eligible for Member grade, please contact our Membership team on 0845 058 1356 or on membership@bifm.org.uk.
- As a BIFM examination candidate, you may already hold qualifications which could give you eligibility for exemption from one or more modules of the BIFM exams.
How do I know if my prior qualification makes me exempt?
The two matrices at the bottom of this page outline the current BIFM syllabus for the Part I and Part II modules. Exemption would require your prior qualification to provide a comprehensive coverage of the topics listed for any given module.
If you think this may be the case and would like to apply for exemption from one or more modules, please send, at least six weeks before the examination closing date: (please refer to Timetables for the exam dates and deadlines.)
- an endorsed copy of your qualification certificate
- as full a syllabus as possible of the course you attended
- the matrix, completed as thoroughly as possible, with your appraisal of the areas of overlap between the syllabi.
Please send all exemption correspondence to exams@bifm.org.uk.
PLEASE NOTE:
- It cannot be guaranteed that applications made with a shorter period of notice than 6 weeks will be processed before the forthcoming examination series.
- Applications for exemption are handled by members of the BIFM Exemptions Committee, which is composed of a practising Facilities Manager and BIFM examiner, academic experts in facilities management and the Examinations Programme Manager. For a fee of £30, appeals may be lodged against an application which has been rejected by the Committee. All appeals will be assessed by an independent adjudicator.
- Exemptions based on academic qualifications attract a booking fee of half the cost of the relevant module fee. Any exemptions granted will not be recorded until the candidate has registered with the BIFM and paid the exemption fee.
If you have any queries or would like to discuss this further, please call the PS&E department on 0845 058 1355.
