Professional Competence Route
The professional competence route is not designed for individuals who are in the developmental stage of their career. It is a pathway devised for individuals with considerable experience and knowledge gained in the FM workplace.
Candidates eligible for this route are likely to have at least five years’ experience in FM at Managerial level and will probably already hold Member or Fellow class of BIFM membership. Also, typically, they will have completed relevant Qualfications to support their Knowledge development. This route encompasses a wide range of experienced FM’s with varying needs and requirements.
Steps to become qualified on this route include:
- BIFM assessment of the Self-Assessment Handbook which is based on the BIFM competences, grouped into six key management areas.
- registration on the Qualification programme a personal Development Plan identifying any areas which need to be strengthened within a specified timetable (up to two years)
- submission of six sets of evidence to complete the portfolio. Each one is based on one of the key management areas and demonstrates both knowledge and experience
- interview with the BIFM Qualification Panel
- ratification of award by the BIFM Executive and Board
- presentation of award, BIFM (Qual), at a national or regional event.
The Portfolio is designed to demonstrate your practical skills and competence in the workplace submitting narrative and selected evidence, highlighting the range and diversity of your knowledge and experience as a Facilities Manager.
It is your opportunity for you to demonstrate your professional expertise against the 20 BIFM competences, which are arranged in a framework of six management groupings. The aim is to demonstrate a well-balanced Portfolio, with clear evidence of managerial experience and contribution for all six areas. It is important to note that knowledge and evidence of experience is required in every Management grouping. To ascertain whether your Knowledge level is appropriate, please review the BIFM Direct Examination Part II Syllabus and Past Papers sections on the web site.
Once this has been successfully completed, you will then be invited to attend an interview with the BIFM Qualification Panel. This is an integral part of the assessment process.
