Why did you decide to do the BIFM Qualification?

This particular programme fitted in well with my current role and commitments. I chose the BIFM Qualification because I believe the role of an estates manager has changed in the NHS, being much more a FM role than a purely surveying role.
When did you complete the Qualification?
In November 2004.

What benefits have you gained from the Qualification?

I have gained a professional qualification which I hope will lead to career enhancement.
How has your career developed since completing the Qualification?
Since starting the Qualification process, my career has developed from being the Estates Manager to the Head of Capital & Estates.
What did you find most challenging and how did you overcome these challenges?
Allocating the time required to complete all the competences. I managed this by prioritizing my work and always keeping the end in mind.
What aspects did you find most interesting and rewarding?
I enjoyed considering and reporting on areas that I am not directly responsible for, which normally I might not get involved with.  This helped me to gain a better understanding of the whole FM role within the organization.  It was rewarding to receive positive feedback from my assessors.
Do you have any tips or advice for aspiring candidates?
Candidates should ensure that they consider how they can meet all the competences before they start.  It may be necessary to consider secondment etc to achieve this.  You really need to have the commitment to see it through.
Finally, what’s your favourite pastime when you’re not working or studying?
Motorcycling, badminton, walking and cycling.

Why did you decide to do the BIFM Qualification?

Although I have a university degree in Business Studies, I had no specific qualification in facilities management.  Therefore I wanted to obtain the BIFM Qualification in order to enhance my knowledge in this field and to reassure myself with regard to day-to-day activities in the workplace.
When did you complete the Qualification?
In January 2005.

What benefits have you gained from the Qualification?

Since receiving this qualification I have gained greater confidence in myself and been motivated to expand my knowledge and experience.   I feel I will be better recognised, especially by potential employers.
How has your career developed since completing the Qualification?
I have been able to reassure myself with regard to my day-to-day activities.
What did you find most challenging and how did you overcome these challenges?
Trying to complete this while working full-time.  I had to learn how to manage and organise my time effectively.
What aspects did you find most interesting and rewarding?
I enjoyed studying all the modules and it was always rewarding to receive feedback after completing each section.
Do you have any tips or advice for aspiring candidates?
Have confidence in yourself!  If you put your mind to something, you can do it.
Finally, what’s your favourite pastime when you’re not working or studying?
Working out; spending time with my 8-month old daughter.
