Where and when did you start your working life in FM?

I started working with Salesforce as a receptionist at their Staines office in 2012. After 6 months I was promoted to the role of Facilities Co-ordinator where my line manager identified a need for me to undertake a BIFM qualification.

Why undertake a BIFM qualification?

During my time in my Facilities Co-ordinator role my line manager, Rachel Matthews, identified gaps in my knowledge in regards to my role, this included areas around invoicing and managing building maintenance. Rachel knew about BIFM and suggested that I undertake one of the BIFM qualifications to enhance my knowledge of FM and help develop me within my career.

I was keen to undertake the learning and assessment online to enable me to manage my studies around my work and personal commitments. I approached Leeds College of Building who delivered the BIFM Level 3 qualifications via the BIFM on-line learning platform and commenced my studies towards my Level 3 Certificate in February 2014.

What did you get out of studying for your qualification?
I have learned a lot through undertaking the qualification and gained a much wider knowledge of FM. As the assessments for the BIFM are work based, I had to apply my own work experience into my assessment tasks. The Health and Safety unit in the certificate was a massive help and through the achievement of the qualification I have gained additional responsibilities as nominated person for first aid and health and safety within the office. The Project Management unit has also been a great help for my current role but also for my future roles.

Although I was studying myself I had great support from colleagues who I could approach about particular topics to that I found challenging. I had great assistance in my health and safety unit from my colleague Adrian House.  I found the specification and procurement unit challenging in regard to the management of contracts but with support from Rachel my line manager I was able to work through the unit. Nigel Chilvers my tutor at Leeds College of Building also provided excellent support throughout my studies.

I found the online learning platform the best way to study. It enabled me to study at my own time and pace and I had the online tracker to monitor my progress. I would definitely recommend undertaking a BIFM qualification and the online learning platform to others.

What has the achievement of a BIFM qualification done for your career?
After six months in my Facilities Co-ordinator role and during my studies I was promoted to Office Manager so in a year I had gone from a Receptionist role to Office Manager and my qualification helped me achieve this.

How did you feel being awarded the FM learner of the year at LCB?
I felt valued as a student in terms of understanding the process and communication.  The BIFM online learning site is very easy to use, straight forward explanations and I knew exactly what I need to do and by when I need to submit my work. Tools and articles were very useful and Nigel also provided excellent support in order to complete my tasks before the deadline.
