Tony Hardstone

Facilities Manager,
Mott MacDonald Ltd

Studied: BIFM Level 4 Award in Facilities Management

BIFM recognised centre: (Quadrilect Ltd)

What was your reason for taking the qualification?

Part of CPD programme ahead of impending promotion.

How did you find the experience of studying for the qualification?

Tough finding the time and a real shock to the system as this was the first formal studying I have undertaken in twenty years.  Great sense of achievement on passing, really valuable experience.

How has achieving the qualification helped in your current role?

The knowledge I have gained has come into play in my new role.  It has added confidence to my approach in areas where I have little previous experience.

How will achieving the qualification help in your career?

Understanding the wide range of scope in FM allows me to communicate to both internal and external service providers.

Have you put into practice new knowledge and/or skills?  If so, how and what were the results?

Knowledge gained in procurement and tendering is helping reduce significant costs for my organisation.

How has it helped the success of your organisation / department?

Saving the organisation cash is always popular.  On a department basis, there’s a lot of value to aligned thinking as a FM team, not several separate teams.

Would you recommend the BIFM qualifications to others, and if so why?

Definitely.  Knowledge is confidence.  This qualification has led me to thinking out of the box and I challenged everything in my remit to assure it offers the best value to my organisation.

What’s the next step?  Are you going on the next qualification or level?

I would definitely like to take the Level 4 certificate next, possibly the diploma.

Any other comments?

My online tutor, Beth Goodyear, was a great.  A real task master and very professional.
