This year’s finalists in the Innovation category were not only very different but were some of the most closely and highly scored to date.
Glaxo Smith Kline took top honours for their commuting initiative ‘A New Kind Of Drive’. The scheme, being implemented at GSK House in west London comprises excellent facilities for cyclists along with incentives of all types, for example subsidised bicycle maintenance, reward vouchers and discounts. More than 10% of the building occupancy is registered cyclists and increasing.
There are further incentive schemes, including public transport season-ticket loans, car sharing schemes, contribution to local bus services and even a shuttle bus to the local Tube station. This was brought about by the cycling strategy being so successful that other building occupants were keen to "buy in" to the type of benefits that the cyclists were enjoying. This well thought out and managed scheme is a good marker for other large organisations to follow.
