Working closely with the client, Chadwick International concluded that the Salvation Army could redevelop its existing site by constructing two buildings, one as a commercial venture that financed the new headquarters. The concept of a ’free’ building was a most important statement for the charity.

The interior design phase was undertaken a year in advance of the building programme to ensure that any element of doubt was addressed in advance of the implementation programme. The practical result was virtually no change in cost or programme throughout the build, fit-out and delivery of the completed building.

The most significant element in the interiors phase was the contribution by the senior hierarchy of the Salvation Army committed to the design process. Far from being designed by committee this was a client who preferred to consider a number of options and almost always agreed with the professional team. This demonstrates a degree of commitment to the quality of a project normally lacking in commerce.

In the view of the judges the final Headquarters building is very modern and also reflects how the Salvation Army want to project themselves in the future. The teamwork demonstrated best practice in communication and design for a given brief.
