BIFM Sustainability Award
In the second year of this award, the judges are looking for practical implementation of socially, environmentally and economically sustainable practices in FM operations.
There are a wide range of definitions for sustainability and the judges will be looking for the entrant to identify what sustainability means to the organisation as a whole and to the FM team in particular. In addition, the entrant will need to explain the nature of the sustainability initiative, how it was applied to a specific project and the rationale behind its conception. For example entries on just energy management without reference to the wider sustainability agenda will not be pursued.
Sustainability in FM is about the ongoing ability to deliver the initiative, therefore schemes are expected to be already implemented and in operation, with baseline information provided, together with defined performance indiciators. The judges will want to understand how best practice is used in the parent/host business and how it has been integrated into the day to day activities of, for example, staff and visitors .
The means of measuring performance and value is down to the entrant, but they must demonstrate them via methodology based upon environmental, economic and social principals.
The entrant will need to ensure the following is provided:
· What sustainability means to the parent/host organisation;
· How sustainability has been defined for the FM team and the programme developed to implement change;
· Baseline information capturing the environmental, social and economic aspects of the initiative
· Operational performance against the baseline to demonstrate improvements made;
· What benefits have been achieved for both the FM team and the wider business and community;
· How they have/intend to promote the learning that they have on sustainability more widely
· Examples of where it has been successfully integrated into the routine business practises.
