Details Safety for Senior Executives

This course is intended for the directors and managers who provide strategic leadership, direction and oversight for their organisation, whether it is in the private, public or voluntary sectors. Senior executives like you who set the policy on health and safety for your organisation.

In order to manage your organisation effectively, you need a wide range of abilities, skills, knowledge and experience. Health and safety is one area where senior executives often feel that they lack competence.

You need to understand your moral, legal and financial health and safety responsibilities, in order to be able to fulfil your strategic role in determining and implementing effective health and safety management within your organisation.

Aim

The aims of this course are to provide you with an understanding of your health and safety role and influence your strategic thinking and holistic risk management practices.

Objectives

By the end of this course you will:
Understand the health and safety role of senior executives
Recognise the importance of integrating health and safety objectives with other business objectives in order to minimise the overall risk
Be able to take account of health and safety aspects during strategic planning, decision making and effective supply chain management
Know the consequences of failing to manage health and safety effectively
Understand the principles of occupational safety and health management systems (OSHMS), continual improvement and annual reporting.

Description

There is a huge range of guidance and information on how to manage health, safety and other risks at work – too much for senior executives to wade through to work out what needs to be done and how to do it.

Much of it is published by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the Health and Safety Commission (HSC), but other bodies publish relevant guidance and information.

This course is based on the most important and authoritative publications, listed below. Full details of these publications are given in the course documentation.

This course reflects the principles embodied in:
The HSC’s guidance “Directors’ Responsibilities for Health and Safety”
The Turnbull Report “Internal Control: Guidance for Directors on the Combined Code”
The HSC’s guidance “Health and Safety in Annual Reports”
The HSE’s guidance “Successful Health and Safety Management”
BS 8800: 2004 “Guide to Occupational health and safety management systems”
Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) 18001: “Occupational health and safety management systems – Specification.”

Course accreditation and assessment
The course is accredited by IOSH, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, Europe’s leading professional body for health and safety practitioners. The Institution works to advance the safety, health and welfare of people at work and those affected by work activities.

At the end of the course, your understanding of the course material will be evaluated by means of a two part assessment:
• a 15 minute written assessment, consisting of ten multiple-choice questions;
• a 30 minute project.

IOSH provides the certificates for the course and you have to successfully complete both parts of the assessment in order to obtain your Safety for Senior Executives Certificate.
