| Details | In 2003 the University of Manchester’s John Rylands Library closed for a major redevelopment project, Unlocking the Rylands. Library staff faced the daunting prospect of emptying the entire contents of the building before the contractors could move in: 17,500 linear metres of rare books, manuscripts and archives. This was a unique challenge, not only in the sheer scale of the enterprise, but in the variety and significance of the items to be moved, from clay tablets to computer disks, papyrus to plastic. Years of planning culminated in a successful move undertaken by Harrow Green. Over a five-month period last year they brought the collections back, prior to the Library’s reopening in May 2007. An illustrated talk by John Hodgson, Keeper of Manuscripts and Archives, will reveal some of the secrets of this remarkable project. 15:30-16:00 Registration 16:00-17:30 Presentations 17:30-18:30 Questions and tour 18:30-19:30 Networking and canapes For full event details, please see PDF below. |
