| Details | Practical Exercises in Space Management Aim To give delegates an understanding of the process of assessing organisational space needs, specifying the size of buildings to meet those needs and developing layouts to test the spatial suitability of the building. Objectives By the end of this course delegates will understand: How to develop an understanding of organisational requirements How to Identify the key elements of the project brief How to convert the information in the brief into space needs How to ensure consistency in measurement How to develop and use space planning guidelines How to develop and use space budgets How to test how the organisation will fit into the new building The principles of space planning The process of developing office layouts Course description This practical and enjoyable course provides delegates with a thorough understanding of the process: from evaluation of organisational requirements and assessment of an organisation’s space needs through to testing the suitability of a building to meet those needs. Having been introduced to the principles of space planning delegates are able to put them into practice in a stimulating series of facilitated workshops. Developing an understanding of an organisation’s requirements Before considering what buildings are needed to accommodate the organisation it is essential to understand what space the organisation requires. The first session discusses how that information is developed. Using space planning guidelines and Space Budgets Many organisations have learned how important it is to develop and use space-planning guidelines. Delegates learn how time spent preparing such guidelines can ensure equity in terms of space allocation whilst also taking some of the heat out of the space planning process. Business managers can often require rapid responses from space planners concerning possible uses of space. The use of space budgets enables space planners to communicate quickly and easily with users. Understanding the building Space planners need to understand the buildings they are planning. Delegates will consider how important it is to have consistency in measurement. In addition delegates will discuss the advantages of classifying space use to ensure that the organisation is making the best use of the buildings it occupies. Understanding the space planning process The course reviews the remaining elements of the space planning process. Delegates learn the need for a careful, top-down approach to the planning process to avoid costly rework and to ensure that the project planning remains on track. Using this technique the suitability of the building to meet an organisation’s needs is assessed. Course format The format of the course is a lively series of presentations with many opportunities for questions and answers. Each presentation is followed by a workshop which enables delegates to put into practice what has just been covered. Delegates work together in small teams in the workshops, and are given assistance and advice by the presenter. After each exercise there is a review of each team’s work. The workshops build on each other using a case study approach that gives delegates a real sense of achievement at the close. The presenter of this course is Robert Fernandez, twice winner of the BIFM Training ‘Presenter of the Year Award’. Feedback from this course indicates that delegates find it immensely enjoyable and learn a lot through the combination of presentations reinforced by the realistic workshop exercises. |
