Sustainable FM Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) Research Project

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important issue for Government, professional institutes and the business community in general. However, it is not always appreciated that it is the members of the facilities management profession who are at the forefront of the delivery of sustainability in terms of its impact on the selection, operation and management of properties.

The Sustainable FM (KTP) Research Project is a two-year project that will develop:
  • A centralised web-based knowledge portal for the Facilities Management community throughout the building lifecycle, highlighting existing tools and awareness in a way that is understandable and accessible to all levels of the industry,.
  • Publication of a guide to support implementation of sustainable development and to help members establish a sustainable approach within all facilities management functions.
  • Host a series of workshops and training sessions to engage the Facilities Management industry.
  • The integration of sustainability into the professional competencies and skills for BIFM members.
The Technology Strategy Board's Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme in conjunction with University of Reading are providing 60% funding for the project. There is a need however to find match funding from other sources to support the remaining 40%.

The KTP project is also being supported by headline sponsors Kinnarps.
Kinnarps is one of Europe’s leading office furniture manufacturers, with a reputation for the strength of their environmental credentials and sustainable practices. http://www.kinnarps.com/en/uk/

The organisations already involved in the project (offering financial or technical backing) include; sustainability expert bodies, facilities management companies, owner/occupier organisations, product suppliers, government agencies and other professional bodies.

Members of the project will welcome future collaboration with the Facilities Management community. This collaboration could include among other things:
  • offering examples of best/good practice in any of the sustainability arenas
  • becoming a member of the steering committee
  • offering in-kind or financial sponsorship to the project
