Tony Angel
Job title
Managing Director
Organisation
Edifice Limited
Brief description of the job and key responsibilities
I’m responsible for client relationships, strategy and product development, consultancy activity and quality management. It’s safe to say that it keeps me out of mischief.
How did you find out about the position?
I created the position when I launched the company. There’s certainly something to be said for defining your own role. Running your own business can be tough, but it’s also rewarding.
What are the best bits?
Seeing a project through to a successful completion; using my knowledge and experience to help clients achieve their objectives; and, of course, seeing Edifice’s reputation grow in the market.
A brief rundown of your previous roles
I’ve enjoyed many years in senior roles on the supply side with Workplace Management, WSP and Taylor Woodrow; and I’ve also spent some time on the client side as head of FM for United Business Media.
When and why did you join the BIFM?
I joined many, many years ago. It was a fledgling industry and a strong professional body was (and still is) an imperative. I think it also gave us a sense of identity.
If you could change one thing about the industry, what would it be?
If we want to be treated as professionals we need to think and act like professionals. This means more becoming qualified, giving a better contribution to the institute and a greater understanding of business and finance as well as real estate, etc.
What car do you drive?
An embarrassingly un-PC Alfa Romeo, although my proximity to the congestion charging zone is forcing a radical rethink. I’m also determined to ‘do my bit’, which doesn’t sit comfortably with owning a 150-plus mph car. (Well, does it?)
What gadget or piece of technology can you not do without?
I converted relatively recently from a mobile phone to a PDA, and can’t imagine what I was thinking of before. I also use a rather dinky little laptop and have therefore become somewhat dependent on a glorious widescreen monitor that sits on my desk in the office. I really must get those glasses...
