How to Join?

Firstly take a look at our various types of membership and decide which category suits you. There will be a grade to suit your current level of experience, expertise and qualifications. If you are unsure then you can check by using our simple diagnostic tool.

Affiliate

This is our entry-level grade and is suitable for anyone who has an interest in or is already working within the facilities management industry. You will not be assessed in order to make this grade.

Associate (ABIFM)

Associate is our first grade of assessed membership for individuals with two years facilities management experience (at non management level).

Member (MBIFM)

To gain member grade you will be assessed on your current levels of management experience. Individuals should have a broad range and depth of FM knowledge across several BIFM competences.

Certified (CBIFM)

This is the highest level of direct-entry assessed membership available. To gain access to certified member grade you must hold a facilities management-related qualification at Level 6 (Degree level) and have three years or more management and FM experience.

Fellow (FBIFM)

Fellowship of BIFM is the most prestigious membership grade and is accorded to those who have achieved a level of distinction within the industry. To become a Fellow of the Institute, you are required to already hold Certified Member status and will have at least five years experience in a senior facilities management role.

Upgrading your membership

As your career progresses you can upgrade your membership to reflect your developing skills and experience. Contact the Membership Team on 0845 058 1358 to find out if you are eligible.

You can benefit from a reduced membership of £74.00 per year if you are studying for a qualification in facilities management or are studying for one of the BIFM qualifications, regardless of your current membership grade. We will need to see proof of your student status.
