New sustainable FM report launched
04-08-06 16:24 BIFM
BIFM has recently submitted a strategy for sustainability in facilities management as part of the DTI’s Sustainable Construction review. Sustainability is an important issue for Government and the FM profession is at the forefront of delivery in terms of operation and management of premises. The FM community as a whole was involved in the research and provided feedback on the strategy.
The report sets out a five-year strategy based on research into the knowledge and adoption of sustainability practices and principles by facilities managers in the UK, the barriers that prevent increased implementation and the support required to bring about change. The strategy looks at measures the Government, professional institutes and industry can make to deliver sustainable FM into day to day practice.
Elizabeth Whatmore, Director, DTI Construction Sector Unit said:
“The BIFM’s report is a very useful piece of work; it raises awareness of aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility where facilities management knowledge gaps exist and where training and skills can be developed by industry to address them…I commend [the report] as a valuable guide...”
The report, written by the BIFM Sustainability Special Interest Group, is based on research commissioned by BIFM and the Sustainability Forum, part of the Constructing Excellence initiative, and provides a valuable insight into the key role played by facilities managers in providing a more sustainable built environment.
