RICS Asbestos Awareness training

22-01-09 11:53 BIFM

Did you know that asbestos is the UK’s largest cause of occupational cancer?  More people will die this year from asbestos exposure than will be killed in road accidents.

The 2006 Control of Asbestos Regulations introduced specific training requirements for a number of at risk groups.  As a result, RICS (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors) are hosting a series of Asbestos Awareness training courses, which surveyors, along with other building and construction professionals, are now legally required to have.

The course runs from 9am to 1pm and is being held on five dates, shown below, throughout February across the country to target as many people as possible.  It will cover such areas as ‘What is asbestos?’, ‘The health effects’, ‘Asbestos regulations’, and ‘Working with low risk asbestos’ to name a few.  There will also be the opportunity for a Q&A session at the end.

In recent months we have seen a number of key occurrences in relation to asbestos, which include the prosecution of a surveyor.  With the increase of asbestos related deaths, and the need to improve asbestos awareness, surveyors individually are at risk.  These factors combined with the ever increasing potential for claims means that this is one issue that cannot be ignored.

As a BIFM member, preferential rates will be offered.  If you are interested in attending, or would like further details, please contact RICS Events on 020 7695 1600 or book online at www.rics.org/asbestos09
