Conference site visit to Howbery Park
02-04-09 13:30 BIFM
Twenty five BIFM Conference delegates left Keble College for the morning yesterday to visit Howbery Park, the science, business and office campus in Wallingford, south of Oxford.
Howbery Park is home to HR Wallingford which provides world-leading analysis, advice and support in engineering and environmental hydraulics, and in the management of water and the water environment.
The campus, set within 70 acres of countryside on the banks of the Thames, is being developed as a location for business.
The visitors were shown round the site by chief executive John Ormston, visiting accommodation for start-up businesses as well as one of the huge modelling halls used to understand the effects of waves, tides and marine engineering.
Delegates also visited Red Kite House, home to the Environment Agency and with the mirror image Kestrel House, the gateway to the business park. With an ‘excellent’ BREEAM rating, Red Kite House is an example of best practice in sustainable office development.
The building incorporates natural ventilation and cooling (chilled ceiling), solar panels, photo-voltaic cells and rainwater harvesting. The building is expected to deliver total savings of 33,600 kwH per year or 17.6 tonnes of CO2.
