BIFM and HSE issue sound PTW advice
17-04-09 11:4 BIFM
The BIFM has worked closely with the HSE to issue sound advice and guidance on practice for Permit to Work (PTW) systems.
It has recently come to light that PTW systems are being used inappropriately or ineffectively throughout many organisations.
Originally, the PTW system was developed as a formal written document to control high hazard activities associated with the petroleum, chemical and allied industries. However these have now been expanded, and are being used across a range of industries and sectors.
Numerous accident have occurred as a result of the misuse of a permit, and investigations have acknowledged that poorly created and implemented PTW systems are creating complacent attitudes towards risks being able to take care of themselves.
It is important to understand that the issue of a permit alone does not make a job safe.
Although there is no requirement within health and safety law, effective training is the necessary foundation for the successful implementation of a PTW system. Once a permit is issued, regular monitoring must be carried out.
The BIFM has worked with the HSE and Rob Greenfield, chair of the H&S SIG and group director for safety, health and environment at GSH Group, to prepare the briefing, which is now available online in the BIFM document library and also by clicking on the document link below.
