Sustainability check - the results are in

24-08-09 10:19 BIFM

The results from the third annual BIFM sustainability survey are in.

The optional survey was distributed via the BIFM and Sustainability in FM website, and with 220 respondents, indicated that sustainability is certainly a topic at the forefront of many people’s minds.

The two main focuses were on employee engagement with sustainability in their organisations, and the increasing perception of sustainability in the role of FM.

There was an increase in the trend of organisation's acting more on their sustainability policy, where facilities management appears to have been the driving source.  The results also highlighted the unlikely success of delivering sustainable facilities without professional FM knowledge and experience.

It would appear from the results, that the FM industry is certainly encouraging their organisations to implement sustainability to the highest standard.

For the last 70 years, the fragmented nature of the construction industry has meant it has been continually criticised for its poor operational performance and the value it provided its customers with.

With the benefits of sustainability and 'green' buildings already well established, the construction industry poses a large threat on the environment, due to its large resource consumption and level of green house gas emissions.

The survey has been set up as part of the Knowledge Transfer Partnership agreement, between the BIFM and Reading University, sponsored by Kinnarps.  For more information on the survey please contact chair of the Sustainability SIG, Gordon Ludlow at gludlow@ludlowfm.co.uk.
