New CRC legislation

11-12-09 10:19 BIFM

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formerly known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) is new mandatory UK legislation.

The CRC is a compulsory, energy efficient emissions trading scheme for the UK that starts in April 2010.  It is central to the UK’s strategy for improving energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions.

Between 1st April and 30th September 2010, organisations must visit the website (link below) to either register as a CRC participant or to make an Information Disclosure about the company’s 2008 electricity consumption.

More and more businesses and individuals are striving to offset their carbon emissions and pledge to introduce more environmentally friendly initiatives. The Environment Agency has recently distributed a letter (see under Documents below) to all relevant UK companies and organisations, alerting them to the new requirements. The letter contains further information on what exactly companies need to do.

There is guidance on the Environment Agency website to help you decide whether you qualify for CRC and to explain how to register or make an information disclosure.

The CRC registration guidance is now available from http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/crc
