Engage in Standards Development

04-03-10 10:57 BIFM

The BIFM is pleased to announce the opportunity to engage in Standards development in facilities management. The development of these European Standards dates back to 2004.

European Standards

In 2006 the first two standards in Facilities Management ‘BS EN 15221-1 terms and definitions’ and ‘BS EN 15221-2 Guidance on how to prepare facility management agreements’ were published. These standards have been accepted by 30 participating countries across Europe.

Current Developments

Currently the second phase of the development of European Standards is coming to a conclusion and will be completed this year with publishing occurring in 2011.

The standards currently under development were established as a prerequisite to the development of a benchmark standard and they are as follows:

15221-3 Quality in Facilities Management

15221-4 Taxonomy of Facilities Management

15221-5 Facilities Management Processes

15221-6 Facilities Management Space Measurement

Participation in the committee is voluntary and therefore naturally restricted to those ‘experts’ who, with the support of their employers, are able to give their time and the necessary expense to meet and discuss matters.  In terms of the BSI Facilities Management Committee all such meeting take place in London. Typically the committee meets every other month and usually for 4 to 6 hours, to read, develop, critique and comment upon whatever topics are under discussion.

The current activities within the BSI Facilities Management Committee require additional ‘experts’ to assist us in ensuring that as wide a spectrum of our sector as possible is represented.

If you are interested in getting involved, either in the committee as a whole or in relation to any one particular aspect of it, please contact Carolyn Knight (carolyn.knight@bifm.org.uk) who will coordinate the BIFM involvement. To be voted onto the Committee, a full CV and information on your particular area of focus will be required.
