Vision for the future
16-03-10 9:56 BIFM
In 2007 the BIFM embarked on an active programme with key stakeholders, which included employers, Asset Skills and FM Consultants, to develop a clear framework for career progression in FM which has resulted in the delivery of a new suite of BIFM Qualifications in 2010.
The development programme included the review of the BIFM core competences and extensive research among individuals and organisations, the findings of which formed the basis for the development of the new qualifications structure.
During this time, the BIFM achieved Awarding Organisation recognition plus supplementary recognition from the external regulator, Ofqual, both major key milestones in the implementation of the Institute’s education strategy. This recognition paved the way for the new BIFM qualifications to be accredited onto the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).
Benefits to individuals and organisations
Despite the continuing challenges facing organisations, the new BIFM qualifications offer real opportunities to tailor qualifications which will meet the organisational needs, support staff development and be a tool in the recruitment and retention of high quality staff which are key factors for an organisation in order to gain the competitive edge.

Improved marketability
The BIFM qualifications offer a flexible and accessible approach to learning and achievement. Assessment for the new qualifications will be work based and practical, no more formal examinations at set times in the year, in response to the research from organisations and individuals.
Transitional arrangements
Individuals who had already embarked on their career development pathway will not be disadvantaged. Those who have passed BIFM Part I examinations will be able to progress to levels 5 or 6, while those who have passed Part II will have fulfilled the qualifying entry requirement for the new Certified (CBIFM) grade of membership.
Transitional arrangements for those who were not able to complete either Part I or Part II are in place which will enable a learner to use what they previously achieved and migrate to the new qualifications. Part I candidates will be able to migrate to the new BIFM Level 4 and the Part II candidates will be able to migrate to the new BIFM Level 6.
