BIFM appoints energy advisor

BIFM has appointed Bill Wright as an energy advisor to the Institute. Wright, who has extensive experience in managing energy, will provide advice across a range of BIFM activities, including public affairs, events and education.

BIFM’s Corporate & Public Affairs Director Richard Byatt explained the thinking behind the appointment: "BIFM needs specialist knowledge to engage with members and other stakeholders. This is particularly true for energy management and the broader carbon reduction agenda, where we are increasingly being asked to respond to consultation, participate in debate or simply offer an opinion.

"It is important that the Institute is able to respond to these opportunities in a timely fashion. Additionally, better understanding of the issues will help the Institute shape its own activities and events. Bill’s knowledge and experience will complement that of our many volunteers, to ensure we can properly represent the FM viewpoint."

Wright is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers. Until last year he was Corporate Energy and Environment Manager with the John Lewis Partnership.

He was chairman of one of the original DEFRA consultation committees for the Carbon Reduction Commitment; is chairman of the Electrical Safety Council and a Director of Summitskills. He will chair the Retail Energy Forum, a group of major national retailers who exchange information on energy and environment matters, from September.

Wright’s role will include helping to draft briefings and position papers; providing expert input to BIFM groups and projects; informing the Institute’s response to Government consultations; giving ’early warning’ of upcoming issues; supporting qualification and curriculum development.

Commenting on his appointment, Wright said: "I am very pleased to be working with the BIFM. Facilities managers are on the frontline of energy management and carbon reduction. It is important that their voice is heard and that they work closely with other professionals to improve the performance of the UK’s building stock."
