Catering - It's all in the mix! - BIFM South Region CPD event

The BIFM South Regions July event on Catering attracted nearly forty members to visit British America Tobacco’s (BAT) prestigious premises in Southampton.
First on the agenda was Chris Stern of Stern Consultancy and a BIFM member to discuss the radical changes being experience in the food services industry and what educated clients are expecting from their suppliers.
Good quality food is still a must but catering is all about meeting the diverse needs of their customers who demand something more akin to fast street food rather than meat and two veg. Customers want bright boutique serving places that offer delicious food and are looking for High Street brands. He cites the likes of Google and Microsoft’s workplaces as excellent examples of matching the on-site food services and refreshments in café style environments. He said “Catering should reflect the culture of the client, who must be fully committed to providing a healthy and nutritious offering at the right price”.
Our second speaker, Graham Eveleigh, Head of Skills and Development at BaxterStorey picked up Stern’s theme. He promoted investment in skills and training within the food service industry and referenced the professionalization of facilities management as a clear signal to people wanting to get into the industry. He said “There is a no better time to get into careers like catering because not only do you pick up skills for life you can have a fulfilling career in the service industry.” He went on to add that Food service companies should be proud of delivering added value through innovations like fresh food, theme days and high standards of quality fast food.
Afterwards a presentation of a Level 4 certificate in FM was made by Martin Atkinson, Chair of South Region to James Money, Centre Manager at Basepoint.
