Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
The process of continuing professional development (CPD) helps people to assess their current skills and to identify goals and areas for future development. It also helps to plan how learning and growth will be managed.
The FM Professional Standards will be used to assist all FM practitioners and BIFM members at all grades with their CPD by identifying current level of skill, knowledge and experience based on the competence statements provided for each functional area component. CPD is a process of continual striving for, achieving and renewing learning and development goals.
The FM Professional Standards can be used to benchmark current personal performance, identify development goals and ambitions and put in place professional development plans.

Attaining professional standards
The BIFM Qualifications in Facilities Management cover the spectrum of facilities management. The qualifications have been developed and are awarded by BIFM, the professional body for facilities management. These qualifications have been designed and developed following extensive research with key stakeholders, resulting in a suite of qualifications which are flexible and fit-for-purpose to meet the needs of a dynamic FM industry.
The qualifications have been designed for application globally, country specific information can be applied in the delivery of the qualifications but the fundamental standards and units work across international boundaries.
> These qualifications are regulated qualifications and, like any external qualification, provides independent confirmation that an individual has mastered the relevant subject matter.
> BIFM qualifications have the advantage of forming part of the system managed by Ofqual, which reports directly to government. This recognition confirms the value of the qualifications as external measures of achievement.
> BIFM qualifications have been designed by facilities management practitioners to cover the knowledge and skills required at different career stages in facilities management, from new entrants to posts such as Strategic Director of Facilities.
