Teresa Lowers

Office Services Supervisor, Houlihan Lokey

Studied: BIFM Level 4 Certificate in Facilities Management

BIFM recognised centre: (Quadrilect Ltd)

What was your reason for taking the qualification?

The decision was linked to my appraisal and personal development, although I actually chose the course and options I wanted to do.

Did you consider any other FM qualifications? And if so, why did you choose the BIFM Qualification in Facilities Management ?

I had completed the Level 3 Award in Facilities Management in November 2010 with Quadrilect and picked up the BIFM information there. This seemed a natural progression.

How did you find the experience of studying for the qualification?

The experience was positive especially meeting others in similar positions but varying industries, highlighting how varied the Facilities role can be.

How has achieving the qualification helped in your current role?

The training days on the different subjects have raised my awareness of many issues that fall under the facilities management role. I feel I am now more professional and the award has given me confidence in tackling the daily tasks along with larger projects.

How will achieving the qualification help in your career?

Short term if I stay with this company it will not make a great deal of difference. In the long term I hope it will be seen as a positive on my CV.

Have you put into practice new knowledge and/or skills?

Generally I am now using budgets and forecasting and also Health and Safety.  I am pushing for the company to be more proactive. I am now more involved in the company’s Business Continuity discussions and keeping relevant records up to date.

How has it helped the success of your department?

I have noticed a greater awareness in the department of issues such as Health and Safety and also budgets.

Did your employer fund your qualification?

Would you recommend the BIFM qualifications to others, and if so why?

Yes I would, as I felt the course was easy to follow, everything explained clearly and as long as you put the time in to do the assignments, the qualification is achievable.

What’s the next step? Are you going on to the next qualification or level?

Not at the moment as it is not really required. I may look at adding options that are more relevant rather then a complete qualification.
