Impact on Organisation and Workplace
Sponsored by Initial Facilities
Plantronics developed their Simply Smarter Office to transform their UK HQ in 2011. The plan was to deliver a consolidation of their buildings from 3 to 1, create a flexible approach to work for their employees and to support inter-department interaction. The plan was bought into across the whole business and particularly so by the executive team. The business was supported by an external party and developed an approach to their workplace using the “4 C’s” - Communicate / Collaborate / Concentrate / Contemplate to determine working areas and styles. Plantronics used this principle to determine the areas in which work groups would sit and the adjacencies needed to support their desire for interdepartmental working – along with the appropriate technology to support the groups. Employees have considerable ability to work flexibly including homeworking and Plantronics have seen significant benefits from these changes in areas such as staff morale and a major reduction in absences from work along with the cost reductions the consolidation has delivered.
The Judges who reviewed the entry commented:
“Excellent turnaround of previously ordinary buildings into new space directly aligned to corporate culture. VERY IMPRESSIVE INDEED”
“Real measures that show this to have worked and to be supporting creativity and staff well-being and productivity.”
Highly commended: Channel 4
A strategic decision to outsource broadcast transmission operations provided an opportunity to deliver a property consolidation and rationalisation for Channel 4. This involved moving all of their operations to their HQ building by making use of the former broadcast transmission space, delivering a building upgrade and increasing the building capacity. The programme was led by the FM team with the full support of the business and has delivered a building that fully supports Channel 4’s corporate objective, provides a variety of working spaces and allows for the creativity and collaboration the business was looking to deliver.
