Stage set to showcase outstanding FM through the 2016 BIFM Awards

Today saw the eagerly anticipated launch of the 2016 BIFM Awards, supported by Carillion in a new headline sponsor partnership. This year sees 14 categories to identify facilities management (FM) individuals, teams and organisation across the three central groups of ‘people’, ‘innovation’ and ‘impact’.

Notable developments for the 2016 awards include a new category to reflect FM’s importance in organisational success, through the ‘Impact on Organisational Performance’ Award. This new category is searching for FM innovators who can clearly demonstrate how the FM function, provision, or process change has made a significant contribution to the top level performance metrics of the organisation.  
In the ‘people’ categories, a full review and refresh has taken place on the individual categories. Two new categories have been introduced in ‘Leader of the Year’ and ‘Manager of the Year’ and the Rising Talent category has been updated to become ‘Newcomer of the Year’.

The inaugural Manager of the Year will be an experienced FM exponent who is responsible for managing others and steering them to success. Whilst the Leader of the Year will be an ambassador for the FM profession with notable career successes which are acknowledged by peers. Newcomer of the Year is open to professionals of any age who have joined the FM profession within the last three years and made a substantial impact and quick progression within that time. 

Speaking on the launch of the 2016 BIFM Awards, Chair of the Judges, Steve Gladwin said “This is now my third year as Chair of the Judges, and although the BIFM Awards ceremony is just one evening, the full awards cycle is an ongoing process. We started planning for the 2016 last year, ensuring that the categories and awards for 2016 remain reflective of the FM sector and profession but also challenges and leads the profession forward. As Ghandi said ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world’ and with the Awards it is an important part of their role to lead the change that we need to see throughout profession. 

“As such, the new Impact on Organisational Performance category is a real statement award, ultimately this is what we are all employed for, and what success in all the other categories should ultimately be working towards and contributing to – improving the performance of the organisations we work for.”

Regarding the refreshed categories for FM professionals’ individual recognition, Gladwin said “By creating new Leader and Manager of the Year categories the BIFM Awards are providing the opportunity to showcase exemplary talent at each career stage. In addition to this is the refocused Newcomer of the Year Award will recognise new talent making immediate impact within just 3 years of joining the profession.”

Gladwin continued, “Year-on-year I am continually amazed by the reach of the BIFM Awards, which is continually increasing as they grow in stature. Entries and nominations are received from right across the FM sector and the wider FM profession, and not just those based in the UK, but internationally too. I think much of this trend is down to BIFM’s brilliant track record of success in the Global FM Awards for Excellence. This places BIFM Award entries as the best in the world, and as such being part of our awards sends out a very strong message. With this in mind I would encourage everyone to be part of the 2016 BIFM Awards.”

The BIFM Awards are open to all across the FM profession – you do not need to be a BIFM member to enter. International entries are also welcome across all 14 categories. Entries and nominations must be received by 27 May 2016 (the Lifetime Achievement category closes on 29 July). Finalists are expected to be announced mid-August and winners will be revealed at the BIFM Awards ceremony taking place on 10 October 2016.
