04-07-16 15:31 BIFM
The University of Brighton was host to the BIFM South Region June event and our speaker Martin Pickard winner of the 2015 BIFM Lifetime Achievement Award.
Martin has an established history and proven track record in FM. He was Head of Estates at BT, then Head of Property and Business Services at Cellnet – spending over 20 years as an innovative in-house FM practitioner. Martin then spent several years in the role as MD/CEO at leading service providers such as Citex and Reliance. Today he is better known as the FM Guru.
His talk took the audience through five decades of the development of FM, including the creation of BIFM through the amalgamation of the AFM and IFM in 1993 and noted there were three members of the AFM in the audience today. He paralleled the impact of the economy through the decades as well what he was doing in his career, which was heavily influenced by regular recessions and changes in technology. He demonstrated the journey of FM from large in-house teams through contracting-out, bundling of services and the total outsourcing market. His story also tracked the progress of professional qualifications right through to the current raft of award, certificates and diploma’s in FM but stressed the importance of the facilities role and how experience can be gained on the job, leading to a fulfilling career. Martin closed his presentation by referring to his FM mind map to demonstrate how FM can be complex and far reaching into the core of any organisation.
After answering questions from the audience, Martin presented a Level 6 Award to Jayne Townsend from The University of Sussex, a South Region member and Chair of the Education Special Interest Group.
Ian Fielder, chair of South Region thanked Martin for his very interesting talk, the event sponsor’s bof Furniture Design, and Edward Baden Relocation Services, regional sponsors Procore and the Resourcing Group and Janet Hunt from the University of Brighton for hosting the event. Over £50 was raised for the BIFM South nominated charity, Help for Heroes.
