ISO 41001 Facilities Management – Management Systems is the latest in a new series of international standards for facilities management to be published by the International Organisation for Standardisation.
“A significant day for FM” tweeted Stan Mitchell, former BIFM Chairman, now Chair of the committee which oversees the development of the international professional standards for facilities management.
In an earlier piece on the new suite of standards for FM World, Mitchell explained why standards matter for FM. “Research has shown that implementing standards can improve organisational effectiveness by boosting operational performance, enhancing customer service and delivering cost savings. This is a big deal for the facilities function, but more importantly for the wider organisation.”
ISO 41001 Facilities management – Management systems, is the latest in a series of standards to go live. The new standards will act as a strategic tool and a set of guidelines. With its own Management System Standard, FM will better engage and be recognised as the professional discipline it is.
BIFM’s Senior International Business Development Manager, Neil Everitt says “We believe that the set of standards offers a big opportunity for facilities management to cement its importance in the economic and social success of nations and organisations. The ISO 41000 family of standards can act as a solid base for the sector, defining clear expectations for FM buyers and providers, reducing the risk of being undercut on price and facilitating a greater focus on the value of service delivered.” This is so important as the industry continues to lean towards a quality driven model of FM.
The floor created by standards also underpins the opportunity for professional development within the industry because it delineates the minimum requirements for the FM service and role, from which to develop and advance to improved facilities management offerings, further establishing FM as a definitive career path with progressive opportunities.
