BIFM South Region reports on April CPD event - 'Is your data safe!?'
30-04-18 11:7 BIFM
The BIFM South Region April event heard two experts speaking about the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and cyber security. Jason Cobine, an insurance business expert and Darren Wildgoose, an expert trainer in cyber security spoke about the incoming General Data Protection Regulations which has a direct effect in each EU member state. They said that putting the Brexit-wrangling to one side, the UK is obliged to implement GDPR this year.
They both stressed that GDPR is in place as cyber security comprises technologies, processes and controls that are designed to protect systems, networks and data from cyber-attacks. Effective cyber security reduces the risk of cyber-attacks, and protects organizations and individuals from the unauthorized exploitation of systems, networks and technologies.
Companies that collect data on citizens in European Union (EU) countries will need to comply with strict new rules around protecting customer data by May 25. GDPR is expected to set a new standard for consumer rights regarding their data, but companies will be challenged as they put systems and processes in place to comply.
Compliance will cause some concerns and new expectations of security teams. For example, the GDPR takes a wide view of what constitutes personal identification information. Companies will need the same level of protection for things like an individualís IP address or cookie data as they do for name, address and Social Security number.
A Q&A session helped answer queries the attendees had on data security and compliance with the law/insurance requirements.
The event will culminated in refreshments and networking and a charity collection was made on behalf of Rowanís Hospice and the national chairs charity raised £44.00.
We would like to thank Linx International Group for hosting this event and providing refreshments and our speakers for sharing their knowledge and experience.
