Grenfell: Industry comes together to Implement Hackitt Report Recommendations

14-06-18 14:47 BIFM

A year on since the Grenfell Tower fire, it may seem at times that progress on changes to fire safety in buildings is frustratingly slow. However, change is coming in a systemic manner and it is vital for industry to take the time to get the right framework in place to protect future generations.

Organisations from the construction and fire sectors have formed an Independent Steering Group to take forward key recommendations in Dame Judith Hackittís†Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety.

The Steering Group is part of the Industry Response Group which was set up in July last year to coordinate action and advice to building owners in the wake of the Grenfell fire. It will build on work already started to identify and develop specific competency frameworks and accreditation pathways for those working on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of higher risk residential buildings.

BIFMís Life Safety Working Group, which made several recommendations that were incorporated in Dame Judith Hackittís report, is represented on several working groups of the Steering Group and will continue to work alongside other industry bodies to develop the skills, knowledge and competences which will ensure that a tragedy such as Grenfell cannot happen again.

Further details about the work of the Steering Group can be found in this†press release.

BIFM has announced its plans to develop new certified accreditation and training for facilities managers in charge of life safety in buildings. More details can be found†here.
