2018 Sustainability in FM Survey: how are you embedding sustainable practices?

The British Institute of Facilities Management has launched its annual survey exploring how facilities management professionals are engaging with the sustainability agenda. The survey is led by the BIFM Sustainability Special Interest Group (SIG).

Now in its twelfth year the Sustainability in FM survey provides invaluable information about which aspects of this key agenda organisations are engaging with, such as social value, digitalisation and energy benchmarking and the drivers which bring issues to the forefront of business.

Responses will provide valuable information on current practices and future needs taking place in workplaces across the economy. The survey will give FMs from all disciplines of the sector an insider’s view on practices for successful engagement with this important agenda to help them add value, wherever they are.

The insight from this survey will be especially timely given Monday’s announcement by Cabinet Office Minister David Lidington that the Social Value Act’s requirements will be extended across government to ensure that, where appropriate, all major procurements explicitly evaluate rather than simply “consider” social value.  

BIFM is exploring how best to deliver an FM specific framework to evaluate and promote Social Value solutions and the survey output will help inform its next steps. An FM framework will enable members to demonstrate added benefits in the areas of Social Value (social, economic and environmental) which in turn will make it easier to share the wider value of FM and bring about a culture shift away from the ‘race to the bottom’.

Greg Davies, leading the survey for the Sustainability SIG commented, “This is the only survey which offers a full picture of the challenges that facilities managers face in making their practices more sustainable. Now in its 12th year, we can see how responsibilities have changed over time and assess positive developments in the sector. The survey also helps guide engagement with FMs to provide relevant events throughout the year for information sharing and the exchange of ideas”.

Building on the framework of previous editions, 2018’s survey has been refined to provide valuable insight in understanding the wide responsibility that FM professionals have in relation to sustainability as well as the barriers and incentives on the topic.
